American Express cover negates 'prohibitive' overseas medical costs

People making trips to the US in the near future are being advised to make sure they possess adequate medical insurance.

Despite sterling being particularly strong compared to the US dollar at present, medical treatment is still considered to be among the most expensive in the world in the US.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, said that for those people who fall ill in the US, "it can cost a small fortune if you do not have the right travel insurance cover".

Global travel insurance provider American Express offers a number of insurance policies, with either £10 million or £15 million of emergency medical expenses and repatriation cover being available.

Purchasing an American Express insurance package could counter the threat of paying exorbitant medical fess overseas, with the group indicating that: "One customer had 16 hours of tests in a American hospital which generated a bill of $20,000 (£10,000)."
