Halifax Home Insurance: Don't invalidate cover

DIY enthusiasts are being warned against carrying out projects in the home which could invalidate their home insurance.

Halifax Home Insurance estimates that Britons spend some £500 million each year rectifying costly DIY mistakes.

With some 46 per cent of British households mooting a home improvement project to their current property, Halifax Home Insurance's senior manager of underwriting, Vicky Emmot, identified the downside to home improvement.

"We'd advise anyone planning any major improvements to their home to employ qualified and reputable tradesmen, rather than going it alone.

"Indeed trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance and leave you liable for the cost of any subsequent damage," she added.

On Halifax contents insurance, accidental damage cover is provided on a number of items, such as damage to TVs, videos, computer equipment and glass.
