Proactivity 'pays off' for consumers

Consumers who take on insurance packages from their mortgage provider could be missing out on the best possible deals, new research from the Post Office shows.

Figures released by the group indicate that almost half of homebuyers purchase contents or life insurance from their mortgage provider.

The group estimates that some eight million consumers could be losing out on a collective £40 million each year.

Apathy is the main factor preventing people from securing the best deal, with almost two-thirds of respondents saying they took up insurance packages with their mortgage provider because it was convenient.

Post Office insurance packages enable consumers to save up to £173 on a home insurance package, with new customers getting one month's insurance free of charge.

Head of financial services at the Post Office, Phil Ashkuri, said: "Our advice is shop around as there are better home insurance deals out there from standalone providers.

"The Post Office takes the hassle out of finding the best policy at the right price by searching a panel of companies on your behalf," he added.
