Britons 'savvy' over home safety

Britons are taking active measures to ensure their safety in their homes, new research from Legal & General indicates.

A study carried out by the group shows that over a third of Britons won't open their door to strangers.

A quarter of conscientious homeowners have a burglar alarm fitted, while a fifth have fitted windows or rely on a dog for protection.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's general insurance business, said that the group's Safety Uncovered report shows that over half of the population are worried about crime.

"As a major manufacturer of insurance products in the UK it is encouraging to see the steps people are taking to safeguard themselves and their belongings," she said.

"Installing a burglar alarm, good quality locks and security lighting or living in a Neighbourhood Watch area can all help to deter a burglar entering a person's home," she added.

Legal & General insurance packages offer discounts on the cost of cover if customers have good quality doors and window locks.
