Motorists could save hundreds of pounds by seeking out the most competitive insurance packages, new research from Insurancewide.com shows.

A survey carried out by the group indicates that many consumers are paying over the odds on third party insurance and might be better suited to taking out a comprehensive package.

Insurancewide.com believes that the typical driver over the age of 35 whose car is worth less than £2,500 is paying on average between £500 and £7,000 for third party cover and only £400-£500 on a full package.

According to James Harrison, chief executive of the group, many people who use their vehicle infrequently were still opting for third party cover when a full package could give them more effective cover.

"The type of cover you choose can have a significant impact on the cost of your motor insurance and of your overall driving costs." he said, adding: "Doing your homework could save you hundreds of pounds."

Mr Harrison also said that the overall cost of motor insurance depended upon a number of factors, including the age, occupation and driving history of consumers, among others.
