Don't get fooled by account 'freebies'

Students should not choose their bank account simply on the 'free' elements associated with them, the British Bankers' Association (BBA) has commented.

Spokesperson for the BBA, Brian Capon, says that rather than being attracted to added incentives, young people should take a broader look at the packages on offer.

Taking a look at aspects such as overdraft schemes, the accessibility of branches near student accommodation were more important considerations than discounts such as rail cards.

Mr Capon said that students should not just focus on freebies, with overall accounts on such packages not potentially being "quite what you're looking for".

"Most banks tend to provide an interest-free overdraft facility and banking either on or near university campuses," he said.

"You need to have a look and … check which banks have branches that are the closest to where you're going," he added.

Taking into account factors such as how long a particular overdraft would be offered was also important, the group said.
