Internet sale could 'speed up' home move

People who want to sell their home could speed up the process considerably by dealing with it over the internet.

Research carried out by Alliance & Leicester mortgages indicates that internet websites are hoping to sell homes on average in less than two months, compared to three months for more traditional routes.

However, over four-fifths of respondents still favour using estate agents, with almost a fifth of people using more than one agent.

Of those people who take on the responsibility of selling their home, eight per cent use the internet, with a similar percentage also selling a property by word of mouth.

Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said: "Using an estate agent to sell your home is generally viewed as part and parcel of the moving process with many homeowners continuing to use them to sell their home."

He added: "But the research suggests that DIY methods such as using the internet to sell a home are becoming more popular."
