Online banking confidence 'growing'

Consumers are becoming far more confident about carrying out their banking online, Sainsbury's Bank has commented.

According to the head of savings at Sainsbury's, Peter Wood, transferring money online is far quicker and easier and that many more customers are consequently using web services.

He also said that online banking packages can offer people a competitive rate of interest.

Commenting on the Sainsbury's Bank internet saver, upon which the rate was increased to six per cent on balances of £1 or more, Mr Wood said: "We're trying to appeal to a very wide audience by not having any tie-ins or restrictions."

Mr Wood also said that the group was "not necessarily" looking to extend its range of financial packages.

"Over time we may do and if we do it will be primarily over the internet," he added.

Starting up in February 1997, Sainsbury's Bank provides a range of financial products, including insurance, credit cards, savings and loans.
