Insuring bike 'imperative'

Online price comparison site moneysupermarket.com is encouraging cyclists to make sure they are properly insured.

Richard Mason, director of insurance at the group, said that with an increasing number of bikes on the road and more people cycling to work, it was "important to consider how well insured your bike is, just as you would your car".

Suggesting that "bicycle insurance does not the cost the earth", Richard Mason identified how cyclists could add a bike on to a contents insurance package for just £20 a year.

He also described how cyclists could insure themselves against every eventuality, including personal liability, personal injury and third party cover.

"Consumers really ought to weigh up whether getting specialist bike insurance is justified, especially as it can be over double the price," he said.

Research from the Department of Transport indicate that 2,240 cyclists were killed or seriously injured on roads in Britain.
