Banking institutions 'provide for all'

British banks provide business services to consumers from all sections of society, the British Bankers' Association (BBA) has commented.

Responding to a recent survey carried out by the Department of Trade and Industry, the BBA has said that it is happy to work with the government to identify ways in which banking services can be made even more accessible to all communities.

Angela Knight, chief executive of the BBA, said she was looking forward to hearing from the government about the development of a new taskforce.

"British banks provide business services to an increasing number of customers from all sections of society," she said.

She added: "Services are not related to someone's ethnic origin in any way and lending - based on credit scoring - is entirely colour-blind."

The group has this week also announced that it will be spearheading an initiative which will see more than a million customers be able to access their money for free.
