PMI policies 'growing in popularity'

Private Medical Insurance (PMI) policies are becoming increasingly popular among consumers, new research from the British Association of Insurers (ABI) suggests.

Figures released by the group show that last year some 1,030,000 people subscribed to personal PMI policies, an increase of 1.8 per cent from the year before.

The ABI estimates that nearly six million adults and children are covered by personal and corporate PMI plans.

Celebrating the benefits of a PMI policy, Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said they offer people "greater choice of treatment and other services for a wide range of medical conditions and injuries".

Lauding those individuals who purchase PMI policies for their families, Mr Starling also identified the increasing tendency among employers to purchase such policies for staff, a process which he said would ensure that "people can get back to work sooner after illness or injury".
