Young Britons 'sacrifice' education for property investment

Young Britons are making many sacrifices to enable themselves to invest in bricks and mortar for the first time.

Research carried out by Lloyds TSB mortgages indicates that one in ten young people have sacrificed going to university in order to get onto the property ladder.

The group's figures also indicate that a third of 18 to 24-year-olds would call for a cut in university tuition fees to help them invest in their first property.

Lloyds TSB's Next Generation of Homeowners Report indicates that owning a home is the most important goal for three-quarters of young people before they hit the age of 30.

By comparison, career aspirations are far lower, with just a third of respondents seeking a management level role.

Alison Burns, mortgage sales director at Lloyds TSB, said: "The fact people are willing to forgo their education highlights the importance of homeownership to the younger generation."

"However, these extreme measures may not always be necessary, as the research shows a number of misconceptions about the modern housing market," she added.
