Flooding highlights insurance 'importance'

The extensive flooding which has occurred in parts of Britain over the past week indicate the importance of having adequate home contents cover in place.

Commenting on the situation which has seen thousands of homes experience significant damage, Nationwide Building Society is calling upon homeowners to put into action a series of plans to counter the threat.

Those people affected by flood waters are being encouraged to inform their insurer as soon as possible to receive advice.

In order to avert as much damage as possible to properties, Britons are advised to move valuables upstairs, to avoid using gas and electricity and to keep all receipts, among others.

They should also check whether their insurance company offers alternative accommodation under the terms of their policy.

Robin Bailey, divisional director for insurance at Nationwide, said: "The terrible flooding we have seen across the UK has shown just how important it is to have adequate home contents cover."

He added: "Nationwide is doing everything it can to assist affected homeowners during this difficult time."
