Britannia goes green

Britannia Building Society is demonstrating its green credentials by planting a tree for every child whose parents open a savings account for them until September 2nd this year.

The Britannia account programme has been specifically designed to encourage young savers to display good savings habits with an environmental awareness.

Britannia Grove, the location at which the trees will be planted, will be in Lincolnshire's Limewoods, with the scheme being sorted out with the Woodland Trust.

Neville Richardson, chief executive of Britannia, described Britannia as having some "fantastic savings [products]" for children, identifying its child trust fund as being particularly competitive.

Mr Richardson added: "Approximately 54,000 babies are born every month in the UK that could benefit from Britannia's range of accounts. This means a possibility of planting over 100,000 trees."

Britannia Building society savings accounts are available at the competitive rate of 5.35 per cent, with the child trust fund being made up of a core rate of 5.90 per cent.
