Brits spend fortune to find love

Brits need to spend significant amounts of money to get lucky in love, new research has revealed.

Solitary singletons stump up over £1,000 a year in a search for that special person, a MoneyExpert.com study has found.

Men are more likely to splash the cash than women on a date, spending an average of £96.58 each time they wine and dine compared to £68.82 for women.

The 35 to 44-year-old age group is most likely to spend big in the hope of finding that special person while people over the age of 55 are likely to be more conservative in spending money with romance in mind.

Sean Gardner, chief executive of the group, said: "Gone are the days of a bunch of flowers and a trip to the movies."

He added: "The modern singleton must be prepared to fork out hundreds of pounds to find love as people get ever more extravagant in their expectations."
