More ATMs to provide foreign currency

The number of ATMs in the UK offering customers foreign currency services is set to rise over the coming years, a spokesperson for the Link group has said.

Graham Mott, head of planning and development at the national cash machine interchange network, says that some of the group's members are planning to rollout the service into their branches.

"Rather than the customer going to the counter to buy foreign currency, they can be directed to the machines to buy foreign currency as well," he said, commenting upon the thinking behind the foreign currency service.

Mr Mott also indicated that the foreign currency service would be a great deal more convenient as holidaymakers could arrange their spending money in the weeks leading up to their trip.

The services might be particularly useful in areas such as Northern Ireland, where people regularly cross the border to go shopping.

However, Mr Mott also said that the physical constraint of the machine might entail that two currencies would be available from the machines, which would most likely be US dollars and Euros.
