Homeowners have "big responsibility" on CO2

The National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has called on homeowners to work to reduce domestic carbon emissions.

Andrew Leech, consultant to the NHIC, said that only 16 per cent of homes in the UK are insulated to the required level.

Insulation, upgrading a boiler and draft-proofing are all measures that people can take that don't "cost a great deal of money", he said.

"It's a big responsibility for homeowners and it's something that they must embrace, otherwise we are never going to move forward so far as reducing carbon emissions is concerned," argued Mr Leech.

The consultant added that people who wish to find out about grants to help pay the cost of upgrading their home can speak to their local authority or the Energy Savings Trust.

The NHIC represents what it claims are the most important body of companies in the home improvement sector.
