Alliance & Leicester Mortgages: FTBs choose work over family

Britons choosing their first home are more likely to buy close to their place of work than to their family and friends, it has been claimed.

A new survey by Alliance & Leicester Mortgages has revealed that 51 per cent of first-time buyers (FTBs) wish to be located near the office, compared to 28 per cent whose choices are governed by family ties.

Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said that people buying their first property are obliged to assess their priorities and overheads.

"Clearly, choosing the right location is key to long-term happiness in a new home, but buyers should also be careful not to over-stretch their budgets and may opt for a short commute to work to help keep costs down," he added.

Recently, one in six adults aged under 35 told insurer LV= that they would borrow more than five times their salary in order to get onto the property ladder.
