Halifax: Half of students have jobs while studying

More than half (52 per cent) of university students in the UK take on a job to help pay their way through their course, a new report has revealed.

According to the Halifax UK Student Finances Survey, the average undergraduate who is in employment works an average of 17.8 hours a week for £112.20.

Sue Harper, head of student banking at Halifax, said that student finance has become "a much more complicated picture" since the abolition of grants and the arrival of tuition fees.

"Working during term or through holidays is a financial necessity for many students. It's important for any student to make every penny they earn work its hardest; from making sure they have the best bank account to ensuring they're not paying any tax they needn't," she said.

Current accounts offered to students by NatWest and HSBC have been praised by moneysupermarket.com for the low EAR on unauthorised overdrafts.
