'Peer pressure' pushes Brits to overspend

Many Brits splash out beyond their means in a bid to keep up with big-spending friends, according to a new study.

More than a third (37 per cent) of respondents to a survey by CreditExpert revealed that they dip into their wallets and purses too much in social situations as they are worried about not fitting in.

Another 26 per cent felt pressured to overspend as they are embarrassed by their financial situation.

In total, the credit monitor claims Britons spend £45 billion a year to keep pace with others.

"Spending beyond your means because of peer pressure can result in mounting debts which could lead to a bad credit rating and, unfortunately, if your credit rating is unattractive to lenders, they will be less inclined to offer you credit," said Jim Hodgkins managing director of CreditExpert.

Last week, independent financial adviser AWD Chase de Vere claimed that debt in the UK is "completely out of hand".
