Parents warned by esure home insurance

Parents have been warned by esure not to let their children take valuable items when they head back to school after the holidays.

A new survey by the home insurance provider has revealed that the average school bag carried by a child aged between 11 and 16 contains £265 worth of goods.

In 60 per cent of cases, parents admitted to the insurer that their children take a mobile phone to school, while 17 per cent of pupils take a handheld games console.

Consequently, esure advises parents to keep the expensive goods at home - or, at least, consider adding 'personal possessions away from the home' cover to their contents insurance.

"With the average bag at £265 it's crucial to ensure that the valuables being carried around in school bags are not only insured but, if possible, kept away from school," said Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure.

Yesterday, Direct Line urged people who have bought expensive items to make sure they have their home contents insurance reassessed.
