Zurich car insurance warning for holidaymakers

Zurich has sounded a note of caution for Brits intending to head for sunnier climes by car this summer.

The insurer recently polled holidaymakers and found that 24 per cent are willing to drive distances of more than 750 miles to go on holiday - though 34 per cent admit to worries about using foreign roads.

Despite these figures, 28 per cent of holiday motorists do not check to see if their car insurance is valid in countries to which they are travelling, while 53 per cent do not let their provider know they are headed abroad.

Roy Seeds, head of motor underwriting at Zurich Insurance, advised: "Drivers should check their policy to make sure they’re insured on international roads, how long they're covered for and if they need to extend their policy for extras such as breakdown assistance abroad."

A recent survey by Cornhill Direct revealed driving on the wrong side of the road and not understanding road signs as among the biggest fears for British drivers abroad.
