Esure car insurance: Drivers bugged by insects

Insects and other bugs are the second biggest distraction which drivers face in the summer, according to car insurance provider esure.

In a survey of motorists, 75 per cent revealed that airborne pests are the season's biggest annoyance, with 21 per cent admitting they would take their hands of the wheel to wave them away.

To attempt to reduce the risk of accidents caused by unwanted passengers, esure is developing a net that will prevent insects from entering through open windows.

"We're always looking at ways to help drivers reduce the likelihood of having an accident and these car insect nets could help to make the roads safer this summer," said Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at the insurer.

This week, research from Zurich revealed that 34 per cent of British drivers are afraid of using foreign roads.
