Halifax: Trees and shrubs are most popular garden features

House-hunters who value a good garden as an asset of a property are most attracted by trees and shrubbery, Halifax Estate Agents has claimed.

Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of respondents in the Halifax poll identified these as the best feature of a garden, followed by a flagged patio (58 per cent) and a shed or greenhouse (57 per cent).

At the other end of the scale, potential buyers are most likely to be put off by rubbish in the garden, which was cited by 67 per cent of respondents as a turn-off.

"Homeowners should treat their garden as they would any other room in their home," said Colin Kemp, managing director of Halifax Estate Agents.

"Ensuring it is tidy and well kept can dramatically enhance the appeal of a property."

A recent survey of potential buyers by Halifax revealed that, on average, Brits would be prepared to pay £10,000 more for a property that has a garden.
