Cornhill Direct: People want tougher burglary penalties

A large majority of people would like to see tougher sentences dished out to those found guilty of burglary, Cornhill Direct has found.

In a poll carried out as part of National Home Security Week, 91 per cent of respondents told the insurer that burglars get off too lightly in the UK.

Fear that a home will be broken into are also on the rise, with 80 per cent of people revealing that they are more afraid of being burgled than they were a year ago.

"The strength of the responses to our survey shows just how people long for a sense that crime is under control in this country," said Mark Bishop of Cornhill Direct.

"We can all do more to make ourselves safer and this is particularly so when it comes to improving the security of our homes."

This week, LV= warned that people who leave items outside their homes to be recycled run the risk of advertising their home contents to burglars.
