Abbey home insurance warns against playground perils

Schools are hotbeds of theft and often children's personal possessions are stolen, Abbey insurance has warned parents.

Research from the insurer found that children aged ten to 15 are actually more likely to have possessions stolen from them than 16 to 25-year-olds.

Also, a full 60 per cent of theft from children happens in school, the Abbey survey discovered.

Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, said: "The report suggests that the majority of school children who are victims of theft believe that it is just 'something that happens'".

While this helps the mental state of the child, it does nothing to relieve the financial repercussions on parents when their children's possessions go missing, added Mr Shastri.

On average parents spend over £250 per year on gadgets for their children, he continued.

Furthermore, one in ten children has had items stolen in the past year, the research showed.

Meanwhile, esure has advised parents that it is best not to let children take valuable possessions to school in the first place.
