Direct Line Car Insurance advice for younger drivers

Direct Line has offered tips to younger drivers that it claims can make car insurance more affordable.

According to the insurer, one in three young male drivers writes off a car in the first year of driving. As such, the group is seen more risky to insure.

"Young drivers present a greater risk than experienced drivers, and, as insurance is based on risk, they will pay a higher premium. They are much more likely to have an accident," said a spokesperson for Direct Line.

However, the representative advised that there are other things that can help younger drivers to keep their premiums down, such as buying an older car or using their parents' vehicle and adding themselves to the insurance.

The Pass Plus scheme can also shave around £600 a year of the average annual insurance premium, said the spokesperson.

Figures released in March by the Department for Transport show that the percentage of drivers involved in fatal or serious accidents in the UK has remained unchanged for two years.
