HSBC: Online banking is more natural for older people

HSBC has claimed that older people are taking to internet banking more naturally than the younger generations.

According to Nick Staib, a spokesperson for the bank, many young people "assume" they have access to their accounts online.

However, according to figures released by Apacs, the number of people aged over 55 in the UK using online banking in the UK increased by 350 per cent over the past five years.

"There is no reason why people of any age can't use the online banking, as long as they can send an email to somebody - which frankly most people can these days - then they can log in to see their bank account details, they can make payments and pay bills," said Mr Staib.

The Apacs study also revealed that the number of adults in the UK has increased from 6.2 million in 2001 to 17 million in 2005.
