Abbey Insurance warning to newlyweds

Newlyweds ought to ensure their home contents insurance is sufficient to cover the sum of their contents, Abbey Insurance has advised.

Wedding guests spend an average of £43 on gifts for the bride and groom, meaning that many married couples are bringing hundreds or thousands of pounds worth of home contents back to their abode.

However, Abbey advises that while some insurers will offer temporary increases in cover, in many cases it might not be enough. Furthermore, 13 per cent of providers offer no increase at all.

"If you are ever in a position where the value of your home contents will increase over a short period of time, such as a wedding, birthday or Christmas, it is always worthwhile checking that your home insurance covers you," said Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey.

He added that Abbey's Peace of Mind home insurance covers an unlimited total sum.

Last week, Abbey reduced the level of interest on many of its fixed-rate mortgages.
