ABCUL 'delighted' with govt loan decision

Industry professionals have welcomed news that the government is to crack down on loan sharks as part of a new campaign to inhibit illegal lending.

Funding of almost £3 million has been released to help specialist teams track down criminals, in an effort to improve financial inclusion.

Announced by business, enterprise and regulatory secretary John Hutton, the move is being undertaken in tandem with other initiatives to better communicate to people how to look after their money.

Mark Lyonette, chief executive of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL), one of the organisations involved in such projects, described the latest funding plans as "fantastic news".

He added ABCUL and its members believe loan sharks represent "the scourge of less well off communities".

Personal debt has become an increasingly common problem for Britons, with cumulative debt well beyond the £1 trillion mark.
