Abbey says fixed-rate mortgages more popular

The majority of homeowners would opt for a fixed-rate mortgage if they were remortgaging their property, according to new research.

A survey by Abbey reveals that 79 per cent of people would choose a fixed-rate mortgage instead of a tracker.

Within that number, 40 per cent would choose a two-year mortgage fixed at 5.69 per cent, while 16 per cent would choose a five-year mortgage fixed at 6.34 per cent.

Sue Hayes, director of mortgages at Abbey, commented: "Fixed rates have always been popular in times of uncertainty when people look to gather as much security as they can from their mortgage.

"We are offering some great rates, having reduced our fixed rates on 18 September - so it is a good time to take out a fixed-rate mortgage with Abbey."

Abbey currently offers two-year fixed-rate mortgages which include one set at 5.69 per cent with a £1,499 fee and another at 6.29 per cent without a fee.
