Abbey reveals Britons put billions in savings

Britons have saved a total of £49 billion to put towards a rainy day purchase, according to new research.

An Abbey Savings survey indicates that 14 million Britons have saved an average of £3,500 apiece which they plan to spend on one large purchase.

Regarding where the money is headed, 34 per cent say they are planning to arrange a luxury holiday, 15 per cent are saving for a new car and another 15 per cent will use the money for home improvements.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, Abbey's head of savings, commented: "It's heartening to see that so many Britons are prepared to save up for big ticket purchases, especially as so many young people appear to be doing so.

"If you're saving up for a big purchase, it's important to make your money work for you. Abbey offers a competitive range of fixed rate, instant access and special savings accounts."

Abbey offers a Super Monthly saver account with ten per cent AER.
