Abbey home insurance winter warning

Britons should be careful not to get over-enthusiastic about staying warm this winter, as heating appliances cause damage worth £3.3 million every year, Abbey has warned.

An Abbey survey revealed that one in five people will use electric blankets this winter. Electric blankets cause over 5,000 fires every year.

And every year a full 4,500 fires start in the bedroom.

Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, said: "It is understandable that additional heating appliances are used during the winter, but it is important that they are checked prior to use to ensure that they are not faulty."

Heating appliances should not be left unattended and people should not go to sleep with them still on, added Mr Shastri.

A timer switch is a good method of ensuring that heaters are not left on for too long, he continued.

The Met Office has predicted "a cooler, drier winter over northern Europe as a whole than experienced in 2006-07."
