Keep spare keys, warns Britannia Rescue

Vehicle insurer Britannia Rescue has advised drivers to keep a spare car key as the cost of replacing a modern key is so high.

A survey by the insurer found that one in six drivers had permanently lost their key at least once and the cost of replacement is four times greater than ten years ago.

Martin Milliner at Britannia Rescue explained the rise: "Accessing vehicles built since 1998 is generally more time-consuming and expensive for drivers due to the introduction of increasingly sophisticated alarms, immobilisers, and shielded locks."

The company also found that many motorists would rather pay the cost of replacement than claim on their car insurance policy and affect their no claims discount.

Ten per cent of respondents said they did not have a spare key, with the cost of 500,000 drivers replacing their keys put at £98 million.

Manufacturers have developed key cards and push button ignitions recently in a move away from using just a key to unlock and start a vehicle.

The Department of Transport says there are 27.8 million cars on the road.
