Investors can build green future

Joan Ruddock, climate change minister, has urged investors to consider how they can influence companies to be greener.

Speaking at a Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) launch today Ms Ruddock encouraged investors to make themselves aware of a company's environmental record.

"They should give consideration to environmental and social credentials, sending out signals to the financial markets to say that carbon disclosure is vital and show companies that it will affect their investment decisions," she said.

The CDP encourages companies to disclose information on how they measure, report and manage greenhouse gas emissions.

However, pressure group Friends of the Earth is unhappy with the current government's environmental performance.

Director Tony Juniper is among critics of the existing policy, claiming carbon dioxide emissions have risen under Labour and that more should be done.
