Nationwide credit card call

Nationwide has added its voice to the argument for credit card providers to operate a positive order of payments.

A study by the building society found that 69 per cent of cardholders are unsure about the order in which they make repayments on their account.

Despite this, 66 per cent believe that a credit card provider should arrange for the most expensive debt to repaid first.

Nationwide claims to be the only provider to have such a policy in place.

"Many credit card providers use low introductory rates to lure people into opening an account," said Jeremy Wood, divisional director at Nationwide.

"These offers can look very appealing, but when you scratch beneath the surface you discover that credit card holders often don't receive the full benefit of these low rates."

Nationwide recently announced a new range of fixed-rate bonds to mark the building society's merger with Portman.
