Confused.com warns drivers about penalty changes

Motorists who smoke while driving could face severe consequences under new amendments to the Highway Code, Confused.com warns.

Those caught smoking behind the wheel may receive three points on their licence, a fine of £60 and an increase in insurance premiums, the website advises.

A CD10 conviction, which is driving without due care and attention, could result in insurance premiums rising significantly or even doubling, according to Confused.com research.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, commented: "Driving without due care and attention is taken very seriously by insurers and this is reflected in the amount by which premiums rise with CD10s on your licence.

"As changes to the Highway Code have only recently been introduced, only time will tell which insurers increase or decrease the level to which they penalise those caught smoking while driving."

Recently, Deloitte found that third-party car insurance costs have risen by ten per cent and comprehensive cover by four per cent during the past 12 months.
