Consumers 'should shop around for travel insurance'

Travel insurance from the high street often has a "one size fits all" approach, an expert has suggested.

Kelly Ostler of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) encouraged consumers to look around for a policy which fits their needs, particularly if they have a pre-existing medical condition.

"The travel insurance market is a highly competitive market and it offers many people a competitive product that suits their needs," she explained.

"When you fall out of that category and have any extra needs, be it a pre-existing medical condition such as cancer or … you are going on a winter sports holiday then you need to look at a different policy."

She added that it is "great" that specialist companies are able to fill a gap in the market for those who require specific coverage.

The ABI represents the collective interests of the UK's insurance sector and has approximately 400 member companies.
