Abbey savings account 'has market leading rate'

Abbey Savings has launched a new account which it claims has the market leading rate.

The Abbey savings account, known as eSaver Direct, requires a minimum opening balance of £1 and provides a 6.40 per cent gross rate.

Additionally, the Abbey savings account offers a bonus of 0.40 per cent for the 12 months after it is opened.

Customers opening the new Abbey savings account will receive instant online access. If a withdrawal is made, the account will receive zero per cent interest on the total for that month; otherwise, full interest will be rewarded.

Reza Attar-Zadeh, director of savings and investments at Abbey, commented: "This is a market leading rate for the internet generation.

"Our research shows that increasingly customers are running their savings accounts via the web and that allows us to continue to offer customers great rates online."

Last month, Abbey introduced a new Super 50+ saver account with 8.1 per cent AER.
