Halifax debit cards are 'contactless'

Halifax has issued its first contactless debit cards today, which will be received by approximately 25,000 people.

These London-based customers have agreed to take part in the first stage of the roll-out of these contactless payment cards.

With the Halifax debit cards, people will be able to withdraw money and pay for items up to the value of £10 without entering their card or PIN.

More than 1,000 shops, petrol stations, eating establishments and bars in London will advertise the ability to use the Halifax debit cards through the use of a "ripple" symbol.

Paul Marriott-Clarke, head of banking at Halifax, commented: "Contactless payment through Visa payWave is quick and convenient - ideally suited to busy cities like London, as it is the fastest and most convenient way for customers to pay for their small everyday purchases."

It is hoped that the Halifax debit cards will be extended throughout the UK beginning in mid-2008.

This past summer, Halifax launched a credit card specifically for students.
