Co-operative mortgages 'go green'

A new initiative has been launched that aims to help holders of Co-operative mortgages reduce their carbon footprint.

Co-operative Bank has partnered with Energy Saving Trust and Ecofirst to develop a scheme that rewards existing mortgage customers with a special rate on borrowing for eco-friendly home improvements.

The Co-operative mortgage initiative also offers free, impartial advice on energy-efficient measures for the home.

Existing Co-operative mortgages already include an annual donation to Climate Care, which helps offset CO2 emissions.

John Barker, head of mortgages at the Co-operative Bank, commented: "As combating climate change is a key feature of our ethical policy and of growing interest to our customers, it is important that we continue to meet customers' expectations and needs through the development and enhancement of our green mortgages."

Earlier this month, Co-operative Bank what it claimed was the world's first credit card to reward ethical purchases.
