Pet insurance 'helps owners deal with vet charges'

Buying pet insurance for domestic animals is important to help shoulder the high cost of veterinary fees, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).

A spokesperson from the organisation said that pet insurance is "extremely important to help people cope with the costs of owning a pet" and urged owners to think about taking care of this need early on.

"We think it's something that people often don't think about when they get their cute new pet - they don't really think about all the things that can go wrong," she said.

"Even basic health checks and things like that - they all cost money. We think it's really important that people do take out insurance."

The spokesperson advised people to shop around on the internet to get a variety of prices before deciding on a policy.

A total of 17 per cent of dogs and 11 per cent of cats have pet insurance coverage, according to the RSPCA.
