The home insurance provider warns that strong winds during the festive season can cause costly damage to houses that are poorly maintained.
With Association of British Insurers research reportedly indicating that about 20 per cent of UK homes are in need of maintenance work, Sainsbury's has urged homeowners to give their property a health check.
People should secure loose objects, such as garden furniture, replace missing roof tiles and identify their home's main stopcock, Sainsbury's Home Insurance said.
Head of home insurance at the company Steve Johnson said: "External features of the home, such as chimneys and roofs, tend to be in a worse state of repair because they are 'out of sight, out of mind'."
Some 56 per cent of the nation's wealth is currently tied up in property, according to HM Revenue and Customs research reported by Sainsbury's.
More than a quarter (26 per cent) of UK homeowners only obtain one quote when shopping for insurance cover and could be missing out on better deals in the process, research by Sainsbury's Home Insurance recently revealed.
