December shoppers 'could spend £5b online'

More than ten per cent of shopping in December is expected to be online, Apacs, the UK's payments association, has said.

According to the organisation, a total of £53 billion will be spent by UK consumers in the run-up to Christmas - up 4.2 per cent on December last year when total spending on cards, cash and cheques reached £50.8 billion.

This year, some £5.6 billion of this will be online as savvy shoppers look to beat the high street queues.

The proportion of spending using cards is also expected to increase, making up nearly two thirds (64.3 per cent) of all purchases.

“Whether buying the turkey or stocking fillers, we're most likely to be using our debit card to pay for them this Christmas, continuing the ongoing trend of pulling out the debit card in preference to our credit cards, cash or cheques," commented Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs.

"The one exception is online where we are much more likely to use our credit cards - which makes sense because of the extra consumer protection they provide."
