British homeowners have been warned by LV= to be careful to keep their possessions out of view of potential thieves.

According to research from the insurer, 15 million Britons admit to leaving items such as TVs, PCs and antiques where they can be seen by people passing outside.

Televisions are the most common item left in view, with 59 per cent of respondents saying they have done so, while 44 per cent of UK households say they have left computers or video game consoles in plain sight.

Martin Milliner, spokesperson for LV=, commented: "Thieves are much more likely to target your property if they can see items worth stealing and high-value electronic items are just the kind of thing they are looking for.

"Burglaries cost householders millions of pounds each year in damage to property and the cost of replacing lost items, not to mention the significant upset and stress of coming home and finding your house has been ransacked."

The warning comes after Abbey cautioned households to take extra precautions to protect belongings during holidays such as Bonfire Night.
