NFU Mutual advises pet owners to beware of classic party pitfalls that can lead to having to make a claim for treatment for their pet.
Based on the seven deadly sins, the advice includes not allowing pets to become gluttons on chocolate, which can be fatally poisonous to them, even in small amounts.
It also warns against decorating pets in tinsel or other potentially dangerous gimmicks that could injure it and not to be greedy for its time if it feels it just cannot cope with all the excitement.
Underwriter Jo Sowley said: "Just because you are enjoying the excitement, noise and decadence of Christmas, it does not mean that your pet will feel the same way too."
She added that last year almost a third of its policy holders made an insurance claim for their dog or cat.
Recent research by specialist insurance company Petplan revealed that their pet was a reincarnation of a previously-owned pet, person or had lived as another animal.
