Ruth Wilkins, general insurance business head of communications at Legal and General, issued the advice after research revealed that women on average spend up to £380 on a new handbag every three months.
With the Luis Vuitton Tribute Patchwork handbag worth around £3,000, the value of a woman's bag and its contents can easily add up, Ms Wilkins noted.
Some £1,500 is the average value of a woman's handbag and its belongings, according to a study of staff members at Legal & General.
"It's probably not that surprising that the value of something like a ladies handbag is so high, when you do consider the variety of items a women will sometimes carry around with her and which are sometimes taken for granted," Ms Wilkins said.
Personal possessions cover can be provided through household insurance policies as an optional benefit which would cover women in the event of having their bag and contents stolen, she noted.
Personal possessions insurance and family legal protection are among the add-ons available on L&G's home insurance policy.
