Halifax: Shop around for financial deals in the new year

As well as shopping around for bargains in the sales consumers are also being advised to shop around for bargains on their mortgages, utilities and credit cards this January.

According to Halifax the new year is an excellent time for families to get their finances in order and a great way of saving money is to try to find cheaper financial deals.

There are some increasingly competitive deals available on the market on mortgages, bank accounts, credit cards, household utilities and even mobile phone tariffs but unless consumers take the time to seek them out they could be left paying unfavourably high bills.

"Most of us religiously hit the high street for the January sales, but too few of us include banking products in our bargain hunting," said Peter Jackson, head of products at Halifax.

Separate research from Birmingham Midshires shows that when it comes to savings accounts savvy Brits are keeping their eyes peeled for better deals, with 68 per cent of those who have switched their account to a new provider in the last three months saying they did so because they were able to get a better interest rate.
