AA: Unmarried couples need 'pre-hab' agreement

Unmarried couples can lose out financially by not having a pre-habitation agreement in place to cover themselves should they separate, according to AA Legal Services.

Legislation currently in place to help determine the distribution of an unmarried couple's assets is vague and may not satisfy either partner, warned James Molly, head of the firm.

His comments come as research by AA Legal Services found that just a quarter (24 per cent) of couples in the UK would consider a pre-hab agreement, whereas the issue does not even cross the minds of the majority (53 per cent) of the UK population.

Even though millions of people are turning their backs on pre-hab agreements, Mr Molley suggested that they can provide peace of mind for the increasing number of couples now living together outside of marriage.
"Unmarried couples are putting themselves at risk of losing out in the event of a break up," he added.

AA Legal Services also provides services to consumers based on claims relating to inheritance tax, wills and trusts, conveyancing and personal injury.
