Halifax Home Insurance: Toddlers rack up damage

Millions of pounds of damage is caused to parents homes each year by their toddlers, a survey has revealed.

Some homes suffer up to £10,000 of damage from spilled drinks, graffiti and breakages with the combined total in the region of £122 million a year.

Boys are 20 per cent more likely to cause costly havoc than girls, according to the Halifax poll.

Mobile phones were cited as being at particular risk of damage due to their attractive noises and lights, Halifax said, with almost a third of householders saying their 'enfant terrible' had broken it.

The most damaged items were carpets and walls or paintwork but computing equipment and windows also made the top seven.

Senior claims manager Martyn Foulds said: "Parents can protect themselves from the costs of home repairs and damaged contents by ensuring their home insurance includes accidental damage cover."

LV= recently calculated that it cost £186,032 to raise a child from birth to the age of 21 and this had increased by a third in the last five years.
